Medieval & Renaissance
sewn-bound Grimoires and Tomes.
-Introduction-

While Brahms is most famous for our exclusive Brahm's Codex Binding which allows easy removal and replacement of paper; As well as our exclusive Brahm's wrap around book hinges (both patent pending), we recognize the option for quality permanent bound books which we have limited to our personal collection over the years and not offered previously through Brahms.

In a market that would, on first impression, seem to be filled with bookbinders offering a plethora of tomes; it seems very few are actually offering true sewn binding in the old world style. The exception being perhaps limited to a few true artists and master bookbinders such as Alistair "Archie" Graham (Australia) of Tallpoppy Studio, who's work we have always admired for originality, and is exceptional work. He was the first to offer the Charmed Book of Shadows(which we have no intention on offering, so don't ask). However, over the years we watched as the market has slowly been consumed and flooded by poorly made copies of Archie's original works for which, in truth, there is no comparison. If you are looking for a Charmed replica, do yourself a favor and drop byTallpoppy Studio. You will not be disappointed.

At Brahms, we recognize that there may be folks who wish to have sewn bound versions of our original creations; we have decided to offer a few of our designs to those who prefer this type of binding.

Our sewn bound books are made individually by hand in a true Medieval and Renaissance style using the same tools and techniques employed since ancient times. Most of our books employ using 3 to 7 cords, depending on the size and thickness of the book. We are currently offering these books in 500 page versions (1000 pages counting recto/verso) and they are done in quinternion quires which are hand sewn, using virtually unbreakable waxed sinew, to the heavy cording on a sewing frame like the one shown below.

Many book crafters today simulate true sewn bindings by using perfect binding (individual sheets stacked and glued on the edge with fabric) and then they use faux cords to simulate the sewn binding. The perfect binding method is what is used on most trade paperback and massed produced books of today, but it is not at all durable, and over time the pages will separate and fall out like a cheap dime store novel.

Our Binding:

At Brahms, we're committed to bringing you only the finest, high quality books, crafted with the passion and dedication of true artists and master bookbinders. Before you buy elsewhere, ask: "is the binding sewn?". If the answer is "no", then run away. Only true sewn bindings will stand the test of time.
